Red Abyss

Released February 24, 2023

Red Abyss is an album I originally wasn't too proud of, I thought it was a downgrade from January's The Cone. That being said, I actually like it a lot, it is absolutely top three in my list of Lyup albums in the first half of 2023. I like it way more than The Cone.
Let's start with the album art. It's easy, low effort, but damn it does look pretty good. Especially when placed in contrast with the scribbly background. Yeah. That's good art. The background also shifts from red to purple at the purple abyss part. This wasn't the first time I did this though. I believe the first time was December 2022's WallBall. Holy fuck I've been making music since 2021 I'm just now grasping how long ago that was. As much as I wanna say "Oh 2015 wasn't 11 years ago! It's still 5 years ago!" No no, That's passed. 2015 was definitely over a decade ago (thank fuck lol). 2020 was absolutely 6 years ago that was a long time. I think it's just me aging and not realizing 10 years isn't that long anymore, but at the same time, it's like, longer man. Okay enough of this stonerass rambling.
This was also the first album where the titles weren't conjoined into one fucking word (except static metal but that's because it was the third, man).
Obinn is named after one of my steam friends. This same person also introduced me to Hexacore Smart Fridge guy from Sadistic Memory. This song introduced the main character who gets stuck in the Red Abyss. This is probably one of my best songs. It's really nice. The Youtube version clips like crazy though because I didn't know you should mix your songs to be listened at like 80 volume instead of 5 volume until Complete Dystopia era. The toms with the nylon guitars are awesome. This then leads into Silence in the Red Abyss, a very not silent song.
It feels really silly for what should be a very serious song. It's also FUCKING TRASH WHY IS THE DRUMS OFF BEAT WHAT THE FUCK AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH. Ok no this part goes hard. AND THIS PART. Cool synth.
AFTERTHOUGHT GOES CRAZY I THINK THIS ONE WAS supposed to be for Wallball either that or I wrote it about the same thing anyways lol it's about feeling like an afterthought by my bestie. The guitar and the drums bro. Those are also like the only things in the song lol. I like the waking the fallen ass melody. I think I stole that multiple times. I like when the guitar sounds all like wavy like.
King guy is ofc in reference to King Crimson. It sounds good but also like, eh. Kinda mid. Not bad though. Obinn meets this king in the Red Abyss. Ngl idk if I even listened to In the Court of the Crimson King at that point.
I feel like a Happy Stop Sign because I'm listening to Mario rn.
This song is kinda trash because it's only piano for some fucking reason. but at the same time it does sound really good. This was the first song to surpass my first ever song (ireallydunno) in views. That sudden ending in 3 2 1 nope nope not yet not yet when is it i know it's coming I KNOW IT'S coming just wait wait HAHAHAHAHAHA THERE IT IS. That took too long the song was getting repetitive bro.
HOLY FUCK BOTHERSOME GOES CRAZY HOW DID I DO THAT (Let's be real, random notes). No but like fr I still didn't know how to make melodies at this point iirc. But the mix of the Piano structure and the guitar chaos is so perfect. That outro is also a pretty good solo considering I still didn't know how to writem yet. OH THAT FAKEOUT ENDING OMFG YO. Who do you think you are? Queens of the Stone Age?
Static metal lacks the metal bro... the drums go a bit hard tho. That outro with the buzzing's still good.
Save As sounds really good I like that sound. Nice and distorted. None of these fucking drumless songs sound finished though what the fuck was I thinking? This also brings my favorite comment of all time "Is this Art?" to which I replied "No, it's the entire museum."
Bring it intro was directly inspired by FCPREMIX by The Fall of Troy. Sounds like shit though. Drums go hard and the synths after and everything.
Purple and red abyss should've swapped, this is such a threatening song that it makes more sense as the problem of the album than the RESOLUTION???? I think the point was supposed to be that "Oh well it really isn't sunshine and rainbows idiot." But like still, why is the problem introduction song all happy like? This song goes hard af though Icl.
Happy Stop Sign I used to think was like my best song ever. I don't agree with that anymore. It does sound good though. It's a bit too simple though. The drums do go hard. Feels really copy and pastey though for some reason. I remember being really proud of this outro where the tempo gets faster but the recording itself gets slowed down. Pretty cool effect if you ask me.
So yeah, not the best album ever. Not the best Lyup album ever. But when this album released? Absolutely the best Lyup Album ever I cannot lie.
This was definitely the last Lyup album where I was just messing around with random things and seeing what stuck to the wall. Mzmr came and it was a tribute to bands I loved and then it was like "Yeah this is a really cool formula to make good songs." I knew that it would result in that as soon as I finished it so then I made Dreamings to be like a return to form only for me to realize "No, this kinda sucks actually."
